Sissa Medialab was set up in November 2005 but its roots are grounded in the work of a group of scientists and science communication experts who worked in the early 1990s at SISSA, to develop highly innovative projects and technologies for scientific information.

In collaboration with scientists world-wide and within a markedly international framework - as the very nature of science requires - they developed original instruments for communication within the world of research (starting from the Journal of High Energy Physics, the first online scholarly journal made by scientists for scientists), and for external communication, towards the public at large (as in the case of ''Ulisse - in the web of science'', a portal visited by millions of readers with an interest in science).

Innovation, quality and internationality, in a spirit of dialogue and freedom of information are the features that hold together a seemingly kaleidoscopic group of initiatives, that range from museum designing, to conference proceedings publishing, to research work in science education and the exploration of new information environments for communication and learning.
